Control cables are exclusively deigned for automation controls. They come with a copper conductor which is enveloped in a steel braid.These are a type of instrumentation cables which send signals to control the functioning of equipment, and are responsible for distribution of low voltage data or signals. The cables have PVC insulation that protect them from the impact of harsh weather conditions. Like Power cables, there are various types of Control cables specifically designed to suit various automation and computer applications. Twisted in pairs, the Control cables possess a balanced shielding, that reduces interference. Often enveloped in a white external jacket, these cables have their specifications written in black, which provide excellent visibility. These are positioned between power cables and communication cables.

Before choosing any copper control cable for your uses, make sure you keep these points in mind:

  1. The Control Cable need to conform in all respects to high standard of Engineering design workmanship and latest revision of relevant standards.
  2. The wires need to conform with the following standards:

IS: 1554 (Part-1): Specification for PVC insulated (heavy duty) electric cables for working voltages up to and including 1100 volts.

IS: 5831: Specification for PVC insulation and sheath of electric cables.

IS: 8130: Specification for conductors for insulated electric cables and flexible cords.

  1. The cables needs to  be suitable for laying in covered/open trenches, ducts, trays or buried directly underground under dry or damp conditions
  2. Suitable additives to avert attack by rodents, termites shall be added to the outer sheath PVC compound.
  3. The conductors need to be circular and stranded.
  4. They shall be dirt-free, reasonably uniform in size and shape, smooth and free from all destructive defects.
  5. The insulation for this cable needs to be “General Purpose Insulation” of Type-A PVC Compound, suitable for a maximum rated conductor temperature of 70 deg C intended for cables with rated voltages up to and including 3.3 kV.

Why to use copper control cables:

  1. Superior flexibility: Unlike most electrical wires, copper control wires are not rigid. This means that they can be easily spread over long distances.
  2. Accessibility: These cables run straight from a point of distribution and make the supply of electricity consistent, stable and accessible which wouldn’t have been accessible otherwise
  3. Can be made wider: Most times electrical wires can’t be twisted and turned to suit our requirements. However these cables can be turned into wider radius.
  4. Superior longevity: You wouldn’t have to waste a lot of time in constantly replacing wires because these wires offer longer life.
  5. Simple installation: You wouldn’t need technicians to install copper control cables. You yourself can install these cables in your home.
  6. Environment friendly: Unlike many wires which cause disruption with respect to electricity by colliding with other wires, these wires are extremely suitable for all environments.

Where to use

  • Freezing temperatures: If you live in places where there are high chances of freezing of objects during winters, then make sure you use copper control cables because these won’t stop functioning due to extreme cold.
  • Water plumbing: These cables are suitable for residential water plumbing and many more activities.
  • Air conditioners: These cables can be used for wiring of 2 phase or 3 phasesystems of rated voltages up to and including 1100V or DC systems of rated voltages up to and including 1500V.
  • Electrical appliances: Copper control cables can be used for fixed supply of electricity to electrical appliances.
  • Canals and tunnels: These cables are used in operations of canals and tunnels where excessive electricity is needed.
